Heading to Wichita

Friday found us back at Park Lanes for Regionals.  Of course Mother Nature decided to blow in a snow storm the night before, but luckily school wasn't cancelled and Regionals was held.  We had great expectations to have another team qualify for State this year, but the lanes didn't cooperate as the girls came in 6th place.  The good news is Shelby came in 6th place as an individual and qualified for State next Friday in Wichita.  Being the team player that she is, she was rather disappointed that her girls won't be going with her.  The boys had a complete meltdown and came in last place with no individual qualifier.  So Thursday after school we will be driving to Wichita so Shelby can get an hour to practice with the SM West qualifiers.  Go Shelbs!  We are so very proud of you.

JV Sunflower League

While Shelby was at school today and I was off work, I decided to head out to Park Lane and watch the Raiders bowl at the JV Sunflower League Tournament. It is a lot less stressful to watch a bowling meet when your child isn't bowling.  The Lady Raiders came in 2nd place and Shelbs(otherwise known as Shelby Johnson) got 1st place with a 508 series (she actually beat the majority of the boys too!).  The boys struggled as the lane conditions broke down rapidly but still managed 6th place.  Congratulations to all!

Sunflower League Tournament 2011

As predicted, the Lady Raider Bowlers set a season high pin count at the Sunflower League Tournament yesterday with 2045 pins.  Shelby bowled a 564 series with games of 190, 187, and 187 finishing in 10th place out of 72 bowlers.  Hannah Haake finished in 14th place, just out of the medals.  The team placed 4th out of 12 teams (just 30+ pins out of third place).  It was an exciting day as the boys all came early to cheer on the girls (and of course the girls reciprocated by staying to cheer on the boys).  The boys bowled great as well, but ended up in 7th place.  Next up is Regionals (at the dreaded Park Lanes).  The teams seem to be peaking at the right time and plan to make a run next Friday.  Go Raiders!

Last Regular Meet of the Season and the Shawnee Mission Tournament

Yesterday was the last regular meet of the bowling season with our Raiders. They faced Olathe East and Schlagle (Poor Schlagle only had 4 bowlers and only 1 was a girl).  Our Raiders girls were victorious even with Shelby having her worst meet of the year.  It was just one of those days.

Today was the Shawnee Mission Tournament where all the SM schools face off.  Last year of course Shelby was the top girl.  Her confidence was somewhat shaken after yesterday and of course it was at Park Lanes (which is really tough to bowl).  Shelby started out with a 133, but never gave up and fought back with a 177, and ended with a 169 for a 479 series.  I was so proud of how she just didn't give up.  She was rewarded with a 6th place medal.  Our Lady Raiders came in 2nd place with a season record score of over 1800.  Eric Steffee got 2nd place but our boys struggled with the lane conditions as well and only beat SM East, placing 4th overall.

Next up (tomorrow) is the Sunflower League Tournament.  Hoping for season high from Shelby and the team.  Go Raiders!

Raider Sweep

It was a clean sweep for the JV and Varsity Raider bowlers on Friday.  They easily defeated Shawnee Mission North (Sumner Academy couldn't make it).  Shelby was the top girl bowler with a 502 series - definitely not her best but good enough.   The kids had to wait quite a while to start as there was an "old people" league bowling very slowly.  Next up is Olathe East tomorrow, Shawnee Mission Tournament on Wednesday, and Sunflower League on Thursday.  Busy week gearing up for Regionals!  Go Raiders.

More Snow and More Bowling

Bitter cold and more snow hasn't stopped our bowling this week.  Monday saw the Raiders take on Shawnee Mission West (again) and Shawnee Mission Northwest.  We once again beat West but were defeated by Northwest.  Shelby had another rough day, bowling 162, 168, and 170 for a 500 series (167 avg).  She was disappointed but glad to have another victory over West.

JV Bowlers
Yesterday had us at Park Lanes bowling against Gardner/Edgerton and St. James Academy.  The Lady Raiders beat both teams and it was a better day for Shelby.  She was the top girl bowler, bowling 180, 170, and 178 for a 528 series (176 avg).  While still under her average, Shelby was pleased as those lanes are really quite odd.  It was wild to watch beautifully thrown balls hit the pocket perfectly and then stare at amazement when they ended up with a 7/10 split.  I actually witnessed one girl throw a ball so far off the pocket I was sure she would be lucky to pick up the 10 pin and then shook my head when she got a strike.  Very odd.  No picture of Shelby as I have stopped taking my camera as the two times I had it, she didn't bowl well (yes, I am somewhat superstitious).  Next up is the makeup meet against Shawnee Mission North and Sumner Academy on Friday.  It is at Mission Bowl in Mission where Shelby won the SM Tournament last year (she really likes to bowl there as a result).

Tune in Next Week...

Well the weather has certainly made a mess of the bowling season so far.  Last week's meets were cancelled due to the "Blizzard of 2011."  Lots to make up - starting Monday.  Hopefully all the time off will make the Raider Bowlers hot.  Check back next week for hopefully good results!
